HOW TO START YOUR CAKE BUSINESS FROM HOME!

Wondering what the first step is to getting a cake business going? Is it easy or hard, or even do-able?
With many mums looking for additional ways to make extra money from home, it can be really hard to find something that fits into our already busy lives. Seeking work from home opportunities that allow us to be at home with our families can be few and far between. This is because many traditional jobs still require us to actually go to work in an office or the like, depending upon the type of job. And aside from that, there’s childcare to tend with, getting a place after battling through long waiting lists, and weighing up the expense in comparison to how much you’ll earn.

It is all about starting…
1. Decide on a business name. Don’t over think this. Keep it simple and it can be (quite easily) changed later.

2. Get an ABN. For a legal business  and  this is essential. It only taken 40 minutes online and is free.

3. Get a website. Weebly is your answer, as this free website service. Super easy to use, no techy knowledge required and you can have a website within an hour. Seriously.

4. Register your business name. This costs only $30 (ish) and takes 40 minutes online.

5. Create a business email address with Gmail. Takes 5 minutes and is free.

6. Order free business cards from Vistaprint and it’s pretty cheap (about $10, depending on their daily deals!) Takes 2-10, because choosing an image is fun (+ $10 for shipping).

7. Get a Food License from your local council. This is easier than you think and costs approximately $400.

8. Practice baking and decorating.  Just as important as being a legal business, you want to have consistent results.

9. Set up a Facebook business page. This is da bomb for getting orders and creating interest. Remember to share on your personal Facebook page and in groups.

10. Tools for starting a cake business, is cheaper than you think!  Most cake makers already have an oven, tins, fridge as well as mixing bowl and spatula, hand held beater and scales. You do need canvas piping bags (Professional Thompkin brand).  The piping bags are $15 and nozzles are $1.50 each.

11. Hand out vouchers (everywhere) ‘’With every order over $50 & receive 6 cupcakes for free’’.

12. Keep all your receipts!  This is then given to your accountant at tax time.

13. Advertise for free on Gumtree and TrueLocal.

14. Order cake packaging. Try local packaging places, to save on postage fees.

15. Approach Café’s and Restaurants with free samples.

16. Tell you friends and family you are taking cake orders. They will be your biggest supporters.

17. Sell at the markets & hand out business cards.
